As It Comes moves to St Nicholas Arcade

14 02 2011

We’re delighted to say that from Thursday 24th February 2011 the As It Comes artwork will be up in St Nicholas Arcade, in the unit adjacent to Argos.

Drop by to take a look at it if you haven’t already seen Alice’s beautiful work, which depicts the trades and skills of Lancastrian independents and market traders.

Talking Shop Project Coordinator

Feedback wanted…

12 01 2011

We’re really pleased to say that the artwork is remaining  up in the windows of 18 New Street  until the end of Jan 2011 now. We’re hoping it will then move to a new home in Lancaster, to brighten up another shop window elsewhere!

If you’ve seen the work in Lancaster or been have following  the project online it would be great to hear your thoughts. You can post in response to this, or alternatively go to:

Tell us what you think and we’ll send the first twenty people to reply a free copy of the As It Comes project publication that Alice has created.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts,

Lucy

Sketch and Stories at the Vintage festival

30 11 2010

This Saturday we’ll be hosting a stall at the Vintage and Handmade Market at Storey Gallery in Lancaster from 11am until 6pm. Instead of a financial exchange for one of my drawings (and a brew and piece of cake) I’ll be asking for your memories about independent shops in the city. So bring me a memory and I’ll provide a drawing and some tasty  refreshments.

Also 1pm I’ll also be doing an informal talk about the work and weather permitting we will walk down to see it and talk about Lancaster’s independent traders.

We will also have copies of the project publication and storycubes and some of the large scale drawings made for the project will be for sale.

Directions are here.

Hope to see you there.

Storycubes

30 11 2010

A set of four cubes of drawings and quotes from traders that have been created using bookleteer.com and distributed around Lancaster to find and collect.

As It Comes Events

5 11 2010

Next week on Wednesday 10th I’ll be hanging large scale works on cloth in the windows of 18 New Street, you’ll be able to see it after 5pm and thereafter till mid/late December.  I’m having a series of works on paper and the drawings of traders at work printed on to cotton poplin which will then be embroidered with cotton before hanging. If you are in Lancaster and want to come to the informal reception in a local pub on the 10th please get in touch with me at alice(at)proboscis.org.uk or call Lucy Green at Mid Penine Arts on 01282 421986

On the 4th December I’ll be leading an informal walk around of parts of Lancaster talking about the issues of local trade, some of Lancaster’s retail history,  the future of high streets and viewing my work – you can reserve a place with Lucy at the number above.

Sketching and Stitching

20 10 2010

I’ve done about 20 interviews and sessions meeting and drawing with traders and am now listening to those and working on some large scale works on cloth for installation in 10 New Street on the 10th November.

Ive been sketching using embroidery, sewing with cotton on cotton. Cotton manufacturing was once an important industry in Lancaster and Lancashire and literally stitching up the stories seemed right as a response to all the conversations about the skills, knowledge and unique relationships the traders and their customers have. Over the next 2 weeks I’ll be posting more about the individual conversations and some audio clips as well as images and sketches from the project research.
